Covering the Community: Prospectives from the News Star
In this era of 24-hour news cycles, web blogs-as-news, and ever-increasing demands for residents' time and attention, the role of community newspapers continues to evolve. In January 2008, the News Star newspaper was sold to the Oak Park Wednesday Journal newsgroup along with other Pioneer Press publications. The News Star has served in one form or another as the community newspaper in Rogers Park and West Ridge since the 1930s. On March 6, 2008 the new publisher and editor of the News Star will meet with residents, community leaders, and business owners to share their plans and hear what readers and advertisers want from the paper. A lively discussion is anticipated. The meeting is open to the public; seating is first come first served. Call (773) 381-5253 or visit www.wrpco.org on the web for more info. Co-sponsored by West Ridge Chamber of Commerce, DevCorp North, and Partners for Rogers Park Special Guests: Dan Haley, Publisher Oak Park Wednesday Journal & Lorraine Swanson, Editor News Star Thursday, March 6, 2008 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm Rogers Park Chicago Public Library, 2nd floor Community Room 6907 N. Clark Street, Chicago
Rogers Park/ West Ridge Historical Society's 22nd annual House Tour
The 22nd annual House Tour, "Crossing California ," is to take place Sunday May 4, 2008, from 1 PM to 5. The tour will feature homes, places of worship, and other structures of historic interest west of California Avenue, between Pratt and Touhy. In the past two decades, so many of our neighbors in the communities of Rogers Park and West Ridge, who appreciate the historic significance of our area, have been willing to open their homes, making the house tour possible. It's our hope that community members, like you, will find this celebration of our history as fascinating as we do, and participate by opening your home for the tour. The annual house tour is the Society's major annual fundraiser, and will attract people not only from our neighborhoods, but also from all over the area to visit distinctive homes along and around California Avenue. Our house tours are carried out scrupulously. People are escorted in groups by the homeowners, who walk the visitors through the homes, sharing stories of fascination about architecture, a unique decorating style, or events of significance that took place within these walls. Visitors are pre-registered and screened, and are drawn primarily from our membership. Society volunteers are posted at each home to accept entry tickets and to provide added security. In more than two decades, our house tours have proved to be a safe and pleasant activity for all involved. It's our goal this year to feature seven unique homes, including apartments. The tour will also include parks, places of worship and other spots of public interest, to make for a rich and interesting experience! Each stop will feature photos of what that particular place looked like prior to the building boom, to take visitors back in time. It will be a wonderful day, but it can't happen without the participation of homeowners in the neighborhood. Please consider featuring your home in the 22nd Annual House Tour. You will be participating in a wonderful kind of community bonding, the celebration of our history, culture and heritage. We're reachable via the phone number below, and via email at rpwrhs@aol.com . Healty Living Tips from World Wide Wellness
The Magnetic Field - What and Why? It surrounds us everyday. It is as much a part of the planet earth as the air we breathe and the water we drink. Fields of magnetism affect us in all the ways that we interact with our world. A Question of Balance · We pass our days and nights through webs of electromagnetism-that generate positive and negative ions. When we are exposed to negative ions such a swim in the ocean, we become energized. · When we are exposed to electric appliances at close range, we receive positive ions, and these positive ions enervate or fatigue us. And this flow often determines the balance of how we respond to illness and injury. · Our health and all our wellness potentials are a matter of maintaining balance in our lives. · It is a basic physical fact of life that both magnetism and electromagnetism work at cellular and molecular levels. When our immune systems are kept in polar balance we are able to ward off diseases. When our Body is out of Balance · It has becomes self-evident to many scientific researchers that when we become ill, injured or diseased, we lose our physical balance: we become virtually de-polarized this enables bacteria, viruses and other organism to attack us. We lose our ability to fend off disease and repair injuries. We lose energy and the natural flow that keeps us in balance. · Drug therapies often used for pain, discomfort and reduction of swelling may do their part to mask symptoms and relieve the condition. But usually they only do so temporarily. The toxicity and side effects they stir up can often be worse than the syndromes they are used to treat. · More and more health professional have began to give serious consideration to magnetic technology as a wellness tool. An important fact about Magnetic Technology Although magnets are not officially recognized by any U.S. government authority, they are rapidly becoming a tool of choice for an increasing number of M.D.s, osteopaths, chiropractors, athletic trainers, and naturopaths for many health related conditions.
