Skokie Banquet & Conference Center Grand Opening

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center

On Wednesday evening, April 11 th , Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias joined Lakhani Hospitality in the Grand Opening celebration of the brand new Skokie Banquet & Conference Center. The evening's hosts, Mansoorali and Shamim Lakhani (founders of Lakhani Hospitality) welcomed over 500 people to the ribbon cutting ceremony, which marked the official opening of the North Shore's  most spectacular venue for corporate meetings and special events.

The Skokie Banquet & Conference Center and the adjacent Holiday Inn Chicago North Shore are both owned by Lakhani Hospitality (Mr. Mansoorali Lakhani, the corporation's President and CEO, also owns the Ramada Plaza Hotel at O'Hare International Airport). Since its ground breaking in 2006, over $10 million has been spent in the creation and building of the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center. The elegant, state-of-the-art facility not only features 15,000 square feet of meeting space, but also boasts a 12,000 square foot ballroom, the largest on Chicago's North Shore!

The Grand Opening festivities began at 5:30 p.m. with an elaborate cocktail and hors d'oeuvre reception in the hotel's atrium. The ribbon cutting, with Governor Blagojevich, Alexi Giannoulias, Mansoorali Lakhani and Sheila Gilani, took place at 6:45 in the Grand Foyer, which leads to the ballroom. Once inside, guests were welcomed by Sheila Gilani, who not only talked about the new facility, but also spoke about how proud she was of her father, his road to success, and his humble beginnings as an immigrant from Pakistan who wanted nothing more than to work hard and provide a better life for his family.

Governor Blagojevich's speech echoed Sheila's heartfelt sentiments as he spoke candidly of his own family's struggles, his life as the son of an immigrant, and how very fortunate we are to live in America - the land of opportunity. He also congratulated the Lakhani family on the grand opening of the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center and expressed his pride and admiration for Mr. Lakhani's accomplishments and his tireless efforts as he pursued the American Dream.

Once the speeches concluded, the Lakhani family made two very generous donations to commemorate the Grand Opening event. The first (a check for $5000), was presented to the Niles West Alumni Association. A 1998 graduate of Skokie's Niles West High School, Sheila Gilani wanted to give back to her alma mater to help them purchase much needed supplies for under-privileged students. The second (also for $5000) was presented to Give Kids the World (GKTW) , a 70-acre non-profit resort in Central Florida that creates magical memories for children with life- threatening illnesses and their families. GKTW provides accommodations at its resort, tickets to local attractions, meals and more for a week-long, cost-free fantasy vacation.

"The opening of the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center is very exciting and will have a major economic impact on the entire region." said Gina Speckman, Executive Director of Chicago's North Shore Convention & Visitors Bureau, who also attended the grand opening celebration.

"Not only has it already created dozens of new jobs for those in the hospitality industry, but thanks to its size and flexible meeting space, the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center offers the perfect option for events of all kinds," she adds.  "We're thrilled that meeting and event planners no longer have to look outside the North Shore to find a space that suits their needs....more people attending functions at the Skokie Banquet & Conference Center means more people dining in our restaurants, shopping in our stores and visiting our attractions it's a win-win for all."

"It was truly a night to remember and my family and I could not be happier with the enthusiastic response to our facility," said Sheila Gilani, who notes that there are dozens of social events and corporate meetings booked well into 2008. "My family and I have lived in Skokie for the past 15 years," she adds. "My father has always taken great pride in the community and had a vision to create a world-class banquet and conference center," she says. "He's certainly stayed true to his word!"
